I really want to try embroidery precisely because of how cozy it seems (and it would feed my Regency Romance daydreams), but I'm lacking in artistic ability. I'm one of those people that WANT to be creative, but it never comes across lol. Maybe I'll give it a try! Any recommendations for a first time project?
Look up stick n stitch patterns on Etsy! Many artists offer designs on stick n stitch paper and they tend to be smaller designs. It's great for beginners! I would try a simple floral design on a 5 or 6-inch hoop. Florals are a great way to try out a wide variety of stitches. Also, use YouTube to learn your basic stitches.
This is a helpful post. Thank you! I have never embroidered but have a million ideas of things I want to do. I'm a cross-stitcher so I think it's only natural that I want to venture out. I don't even know where to start though. I need a beginner project, maybe a kit, with a video tutorial on stitches used. I learn easily watching YouTube videos. I can't wait to see your finished tote!
I used YouTube a lot when I was first starting to learn all my stitches! I know there are embroidery artists that offer beginner kits which are a great way to learn!
In elementary school, I had a little friendship braiding "business," and I used embroidery threads to make the bracelets. I had a little box filled with threads wound on paper spools just like the one in your photo, and I loved sorting through all the colors. I loved watching my friends sort through the threads at recess, which is when I would take new "orders" for bracelets. 🤣 the bracelets eventually went out of style and I stopped making them, but for years I kept that box of threads because I absolutely loved looking at them. I did do a bit od embroidery at one point, but i had no patience for when the thread would knot, and knot it often did. Eventually I gave the box of threads to a friend who embroiders. Every now and then I think of trying embroidery again, just for the threads. I love the idea of creating a tote bag that I love. It's very tempting. But maybe I'll just walk down the thread aisle at Michael's a little more often instead and admire the art from afar. 🙂
